Biography
In his interdisciplinary research, Dr. Hassaan F. Khan tackles water resource allocation and management questions using integrated water systems analysis. At HU, Dr. Khan is leading an interdisciplinary research group (KWP) engaged in investigating approaches to improve water management in Karachi. Before joining Habib, Dr. Hassaan was previously a Postdoctoral Scholar at Stanford University in the Department of Earth System Science working with Dr. Steven Gorelick. At Stanford, he was part of the FUSE team developing integrated hydrogeologic and human systems model to inform sustainable urban water management in Amman (Jordan) and Pune (India).
Dr Hassaan completed his Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. At UMass, he worked with Dr. Casey Brown studying water management under climate change in several river basins including the Indus, Niger, Mekong and the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Basins. His doctoral work focused on designing a coupled human-nature modeling framework to simulate the impacts of water management decisions on the food-water-energy-environment (FWEE) nexus at a watershed scale. He has also performed econometric analyses of the impact of water variability on global economic growth as part of the GWP/OECD Task Force on Water Security and Sustainable Growth. Dr Hassaan graduated from Lafayette College with a B.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2013. Studying engineering in a liberal arts setting at Lafayette shaped much of his personal and professional thought and spurred his interest in environmental stewardship. Outside of his water research, he enjoys reading about South Asian and Middle Eastern history, cooking, and soccer. He is originally from Karachi, Pakistan.
