Across an interconnected set of thirteen required courses, the Habib Liberal Core brings together the disciplines of humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, mathematics, computation, language, expression, and design.
It empowers students to question inherited assumptions about the world and society, engage critically across disciplines, and cultivate a sense of intellectual and civic responsibility.
The Habib Liberal Core is an integrated learning journey built around Four Dimensions, each exploring a fundamental question about the world we live in and our role within it. The interdisciplinary curriculum ensures that every student develops the capacity for critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to connect ideas across disciplines. All students are required to take a determined minimum number of courses under each Dimension.
Together, these Four Dimensions prepare students to navigate complexity, pursue lifelong learning, and shape the future with purpose.
How did our world come to be?
This dimension invites students to explore the intellectual, historical, philosophical, and cultural foundations of the modern world. Through engagement with modernity, South Asian histories, and learning from the wisdom that we have inherited across traditions, students learn to ask how ideas, institutions, cultures, and historical forces shape the present.
Students develop historical imagination, philosophical reflection, ethical awareness, and the ability to understand contemporary realities as products of layered and contested pasts, equipping them to respond thoughtfully to the complex challenges and crises of the present.

No one in the medieval world thought they were 'medieval.' The belief that we live in a distinct period—'modernity'—sets us apart from all pre-modern people. This belief defines our identity and is essential to our understanding of ourselves. This course asks: ‘What is modernity?’ and explores how modernity shapes every aspect of our lives. Across the course, students examine the most critical elements of modernity across political, economic, ecological, and religious domains. Beginning with the emergence of this world-historical identity, students trace the formation of key modern structures and understand the historical specificity of modernity.
How do we reason about reality?
This dimension develops the capacity for rigorous, evidence-based reasoning. Through mathematics, scientific inquiry, laboratory learning, data, and computation, students learn how to observe, model, interpret, and analyze the natural and technological worlds.
Students do not encounter science and computation as isolated technical skills. They learn them as powerful ways of asking questions, testing claims, understanding systems, and acting responsibly in a world increasingly shaped by data, algorithms, and scientific change.

Mathematics provides a powerful language for understanding patterns, structures, and relationships in the world around us, building a foundation for inquiry and problem-solving across disciplines and real-world contexts. This module will introduce students to key principles spanning number theory, algebra, geometry, probability, and statistics. Rather than emphasizing rote calculation, students will focus on quantitative reasoning and build fundamentals relevant to the Data Analytics follow-up course.
How do human societies work?
Understanding contemporary polycrisis requires a deep grounding in human society. This dimension introduces students to the structures, institutions, economies, political systems, and everyday practices that shape collective life.
Through sociological, economic, political, and anthropological lenses, students learn to interpret how societies organize, evolve, struggle, and imagine change. They also learn to connect their major fields of study to wider social realities and responsibilities.

Economies: Foundation of Economic Systems, Credits: 3
This course introduces students to economics as the study of how societies organize the production, exchange, and distribution of resources. Focusing on capitalism as a historically evolving system, the course examines the social, political, and institutional forces that shape economic life. Students explore the dynamics, tensions, and transformations of capitalist economies while engaging with alternative approaches to organizing economic systems. By integrating economic analysis with historical perspectives, philosophical inquiry, and contemporary applications, students develop a deeper understanding of how economic structures influence societies, institutions, and everyday experiences.
How do we create and communicate?
Ideas matter only when they can be expressed, shared, tested, designed, and brought into the world. This dimension develops students’ capacity to communicate with clarity, create with purpose, and make meaning across multiple forms.
Through rhetoric, language, design, and making, students cultivate voice, craft, imagination, and the ability to shape ideas for different audiences and contexts. They learn that communication is not simply a skill; it is a form of thought, creation, and participation in the world.

This course introduces students to the art of thoughtful expression and self-cultivation. Grounded in the broader tradition of balāghat—eloquence as clarity, wisdom, and the ability to communicate truthfully—the course approaches communication as more than a technical skill. Students develop writing and speaking as practices of disciplined thinking, learning to engage deeply with texts, construct arguments, refine ideas, and communicate with precision and purpose. Through close reading, writing, revision, and reflection, students cultivate the intellectual habits necessary for meaningful dialogue and lifelong learning.

I enjoyed Dr Haris’ Rhetoric & Communication course, as it was my first deep dive into Habib Liberal Core and an experience unlike any other. It challenged me to think critically about knowledge, ethics, and reasoning – skills that have proven invaluable even in my current technical research. The ability to construct clear arguments, analyze different perspectives, and communicate complex ideas effectively has greatly influenced how I approach problem-solving in AI and neuromorphic computing.
The interdisciplinary Liberal Core pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me how to learn new things. After graduating SDP, I entered the pharmaceutical industry – a completely new field – but courses on logical problem-solving and the scientific method helped me navigate this space. The Core also prepared me for postgraduate studies, where diverse skills are essential.
