Biography
Mariya Karimjee is an accomplished freelance writer with a diverse and impactful body of work. Her writing spans a range of topics, from Pakistan-US foreign policy and human rights to in-depth investigations into issues like infanticide and shipbreaking. Currently working on a memoir centered on the themes of home, belonging, and identity with Spiegel & Grau, an imprint of Penguin/Random House, Mariya’s storytelling prowess extends to personal essays that resonate widely. One such essay on her experience with female genital mutilation garnered significant attention, amassing over 100,000 unique hits.
Throughout her career, Mariya has held notable positions, including being a Logan Non-fiction Fellow at the Carey Institute for Global Good, where she worked on a book-length manuscript. Her residency at This American Life allowed her to contribute to the editorial process of the award-winning radio documentary show, showcasing her versatility in storytelling across different mediums.
Mariya’s editorial leadership is evident in her role as the Deputy Editor of Breaking News and Social Media at GlobalPost, where she managed a global team of writers and played a key role in shaping the publication’s online presence.
