Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic support program that generally uses externally hired supplemental instructors to help students succeed in courses that are deemed challenging. These courses generally have high drop-out and failure rates. Supplemental instructors could be peers who have successfully completed the courses, or an instructor appointed for this purpose.

Supplemental Instruction is for high-risk courses, not for high-risk students. All students can benefit from SI to improve their performance.

In SI sessions, instructors help students by going through the course material, help them to understand concepts taught in the class, guide students with their assignments, and help them prepare for tests.
