IntellicropPK: IoT Innovation for Smarter Agriculture

IntellicropPK, mentored by Dr. Tariq Kamal, Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and developed as a capstone project by Habib University Computer Engineering students Nimra Sohail and Areeb Adnan Khan from the Class of 2024, focuses on empowering Pakistani farmers with cutting-edge technology. The project created an IoT sensor node that collects real-time field data, leveraging AI and machine learning to predict weather patterns. Addressing Pakistan’s climate vulnerabilities, it was the only project selected from Pakistan among 100 global projects for COP28’s Prototype for Humanity program. This groundbreaking initiative demonstrates the potential of sustainable, tech-driven solutions in revolutionizing agriculture.

Localization App for Sub-Meter Precision

Led by Dr. Farhan Khan, Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, this Summer Tehqiq Research Program project by Syed Asghar Abbas Zaidi, a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering student from the Class of 2025, and Syed Muhammad Muslim Hussain, a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science student from the Class of 2024, developed a localization app using SUPARCO’s precise positioning service. By leveraging RTK Base Stations through Pak Rehbar, the app enhances GPS accuracy from 10 meters to sub-meter precision, making it ideal for land surveying, bridge construction, and other applications demanding high-precision location data. This innovative work highlights the potential of precise positioning technology to address critical industry needs.

Autonomous Navigation System for Indoor Delivery Robots

Developed as a final year project by Muhammad Ahmed Atif (Computer Science, ECE Minor, Class of 2024), Laiba Ahmed (Electrical Engineering, Class of 2024), Syed Muhammad Hussain (Computer Science, ECE Minor, Class of 2024), and S.M. Daniyal Murtaza Zaidi (Computer Science, ECE Minor, Class of 2024), this project automates the delivery of drinks and snacks at Habib University. The robot, designed and built entirely on campus, utilizes simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) with sensors and Nvidia boards for navigation. Guided by Dr. Qasim Pasta, Assistant Professor in the Computer Science program, and Abdul Basit Memon, Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the team created an innovative prototype with potential applications in crowded environments like warehouses and hospitals.

Smart Energy Management Application

Developed as a final year project by Sumaira Khan (Electrical Engineering, Class of 2024) and Daniyal Lightwala (Electrical Engineering, Class of 2024), this project addresses the challenges of integrating renewable energy sources into distribution grids. The research focused on hosting capacity analysis, automated modeling using OpenDSS, and real-time integration of sensor data into the grid. Guided by Dr. Syed Muhammad Hur Rizvi, Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the team explored optimization problems critical for network operators and proposed solutions for real-time integration. Their work has been recognized through a published paper at the 2024 IEEE Karachi Humanitarian Technology Conference and two accepted posters at the DSS Undergraduate Research Symposium.

GaN-Based Auxiliary Power Module for Electric Vehicles

Developed as a final year project by Ali Asghar Kerai, Lakshman Maheshwari, Khuzaima Ali Khan, and Syed Jahania Shah (all Electrical Engineering, Class of 2024), this project focuses on environmental sustainability through the use of gallium nitride (GaN) transistors in electric vehicles. The innovative power module enhances efficiency and compactness, with applications beyond EVs, such as renewable energy systems. The project began with an in-depth literature review, followed by designing, simulating, and prototyping using tools like MATLAB Simulink and LTspice. Inspired by coursework in Power Electronics and supported by previous research, the team published four papers, including one at INMIC 2023 and three accepted for COMPEL 2024. This achievement underscores the potential for undergraduate research fostered by Habib University.
