Overview Of The Program

The Communication and Design degree at Habib University offers a collaborative and innovative program for creative minds to bring about real-world impact through rigorous and thoughtful work. The interdisciplinary curriculum empowers students to pick their preferred path between design and communication, allowing them to develop practical skills in UI/UX design, photography, illustration, storyboarding, art theory, film theory, media literacy, and communication.

Curriculum Details 

Communication & Design major students are required to take at least 39 courses. For students focusing primarily on Design, a minimum of 128 credit-hours is required, while those concentrating on Communication must complete a minimum of 130 credit-hours with a minimum CGPA of 2.33.


Concentrations

The concentrations outlined below are crafted to acquaint students with transdisciplinary approaches and encourage reflection on the methods, objectives, and styles of inquiry utilized in the communication and design disciplines. Additionally, students have the flexibility to choose from a variety of courses offered in other concentrations.

Communication

Master the production process in both new and traditional media, delving into narratives, especially documentary filmmaking and journalism. Gain expertise in media studies and film theory, emphasizing aesthetics and cultural production analysis.

Design

Develop graphic and UX design skills, probing tech's ethical implications for social change. Build a strong theoretical base at the tech-design intersection, exploring political and ethical aspects. Foster reflection and imagination in design, enriching discourse on technology's impact.

4 year Academic
Journey

The students of CND Major are required to complete both a Primary, and a Secondary Concentration in Design and Communication. Those undertaking Primary Concentration in Design are required to complete Secondary Concentration in Communication and vice versa. Each CND Major requires a minimum of 39 courses with 128 credit-hours for Primary Concentration in Design and 130 credit-hours for Primary Concentration in Communication, over their 4-year journey (8 semesters). A set of recommended courses (semester-wise) fall under the following course categories:

Category 1 – Habib Liberal Core (HLC), also known as the University Core, is a common curriculum designed for all Habib University students as a mandatory requirement. A total of 10 courses are included in the HLC/University Core.

Category 2 – CND Program Core entails a set of mandatory courses for the CND Majors. A total of 9 courses are included in the CND Program Core.

Category 3 – Primary Concentration Core. Each student has to complete a total of 07 Primary Concentration courses comprising of 04 lower-level and 03 upper-level Concentration courses.

Category 4 – Secondary Concentration Elective. Each student has to complete a minimum of 04 Secondary Concentration Elective courses (12 credit-hours) comprising of at least 01 upper-level Concentration Elective course.

Category 5 – Directed Study/Directed Practicum (1 credit-hour) to be taken during summer of 2nd year.

Category 6 – Summer Internship/Summer Research Project (2 credit-hours) to be taken during summer of 3rd year.

Category 7 – Free Electives. Each student has to complete at least 07 Free Elective courses.

All Communication Design students are required to complete a practicum within their major which involves fieldwork using the skills learned throughout the course of their degree.
