charlesDr. Thorpe possesses over three decades of rich teaching and administrative experience, with a distinguished record of groundbreaking research in robotics. He is currently senior vice president and provost at Clarkson University. Prior to joining Clarkson, Dr. Thorpe served as a White House Fellow and assistant director for advanced manufacturing and robotics in the Office of Science and Technology Policy of the Executive Office of the President.

Between 2004 and 2010, Dr. Thorpe led as dean at the Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, where he was responsible for setting up the new campus. Before moving to Qatar, Thorpe was director of the prestigious and globally-recognized Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. His research work focused on vision, navigation, and architecture for mobile robots. He led his Navlab research group to build a series of robotic cars, trucks and buses for military and civilian research.
