Rahma is a media strategist who works in the areas of digital media innovation, civic technology and content and communication strategy.
She co-founded and runs Hacks/Hackers Pakistan, part of the global Hacks/Hackers movement, an international network of journalists (“hacks”) and technologists (“hackers”) rethinking the future of news and information. She is also on the curatorial committee of the Women of the World Festival, Karachi.
Most recently, she was a Knight fellow in Pakistan creating data driven media projects and leading collaboration and partnerships on news technology, civic technology and open government.
Rahma has worked on open-data initiatives, media innovation, ethics and improving journalism standards in Pakistan. She created and led Mind Your Media, a media advocacy and public education project part of the Pakistan Coalition for Ethical Journalism at PeaceNiche, where she is now a board member. Rahma was also consultant on developing journalism and technology programs with the Punjab state government’s Information and Technology Board (PITB) and Information Technology University (ITU) in Lahore. She worked on developing media and technology curricula and open data journalism partnerships for the Open Government Initiative.
For more than seven years, she was an editor, reporter and producer for some of Pakistan’s leading news organizations. She has extensive hands-on experience setting up and running newsrooms as a member of the teams that launched The Express Tribune and the English-language news channel Express 24/7. Rahma has also conducted extensive media training and capacity-enhancement exercises in newsrooms.
Rahma has a master’s degree in Media, Culture and Communication from New York University (NYU), where she was a Fulbright Scholar.
