The course aims to combine ecocritical and political perspective on oil. The module will consist of fiction (long and short) and readings on the political economy of oil. We will explore the vulnerable populations around the globe subject to oil imperialism, exploitation, dispossession, and environmental degradation. The course will help us in understanding oil’s relation with climate change, war and conflict, ecological degradation, and democratic stress. Studying literature(fiction) around oil alongside the politics of oil, will lead to an amplified understanding of the impact of oil on local populations, societies, nations, and political economies, often shadow economies as well. In a sense, the fiction will only give a face to the lives oil touches, often in convoluted ways. We will also watch movies and documentaries on oil.
