A Postcolonial Liberal Arts Experience

Understanding

the Liberal Arts

The liberal arts are a broad field of study that focus on developing general knowledge and intellectual skills, rather than just technical skills. They include subjects such as literature, philosophy, history, mathematics, and social sciences. The goal of a liberal arts education is to help students think critically, communicate effectively, and understand the world from various perspectives. Students at Habib University explore the humanities, engineering, social sciences, and natural sciences, while enjoying the benefits of close collaboration with faculty, opportunities for research, and student-centered academic support.

Students

Postcolonial Liberal Arts Education at Habib University

Students, whether they’re in the Dhanani School of Science and Engineering (DSSE) or the School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (AHSS), are required to take ten courses across the Habib Liberal Core curriculum. It is modelled on the nature of the liberal arts, distinctive in the way they are grounded in our South Asian postcolonial context and heritage: the kind of education that does not replicate inherited systems of inequality, but repairs them. As they take courses required for their major, students pair their study with knowledge across various disciplines. These courses are designed to provide students with a breadth and depth of knowledge, deepening their thinking and engaging them in critical concepts.
