This course provides first-year engineering students with an integrated introduction to the fields of Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering. Unlike traditional curricula that delay hands-on engagement until after several analytical courses, this course adopts a breadth-first, project-based learning approach. Students will encounter key concepts across circuits, computing, embedded systems, communication, robotics, and power/energy systems in a connected way, experiencing how these domains interact to form complete technologies. Through guided labs and two major projects – one instructor-led system build and one student-designed investigative project, learners will build functional devices and systems from their very first semester. The course emphasizes curiosity-driven exploration, systems thinking, and teamwork, while preparing students for the more analytical, in-depth courses that follow in the Electrical and Computer Engineering programs. By the end, students will not only gain confidence in their ability to “make” with technology but also develop an initial sense of belonging as future engineers.
