This upper level seminar and studio course will allow students to build on existing skills introduced in the course Creating Comics to further advance their practice as sequential storytellers. Students will read and craft their own stories following broader themes being read in the seminar component and will produce work in response. The readings and assignments will reflect pressing issues faced in the Global South and will encourage students to pull from their own lived experiences to produce work that is highly critical and contextual. At the end, a collaborative final project will ask them to work in teams, mimicking the framework of a comics studio, allowing them to produce anthologies of their own.
This course requires Creating Comics (COM/DES245/217) as a pre-requisite as students need to have strong foundational skills in crafting comics and should have read the graphic novels covered in the previous course before coming to this advanced class.
