Climate change and sustainability are topical areas of discussion globally. Despite the excessive use of these terms in social movements and corporate environments, seldom do individuals realize the nuances, relevance and impacts of sustainability in practice. This course will introduce students to an overview of the interconnected areas of sustainability on which our society thrives such as energy, infrastructure, food, and water amongst others. Local examples and case studies including traditional practices may be included to link theoretical concepts to application in society. This course will serve as a platform for discourse where students will be expected to apply theoretical concepts to their community to help critically address social, economic and environmental challenges prevalent in society.
Students will be introduced to social and environmental concepts of sustainability including natural resources and ecosystems, challenges relating to poverty, waste, pollution, climate, water and energy; and solutions including green infrastructure and sustainable cities. This course aims to inspire students to use holistic thinking and enable them to provide a well rounded argument to sustainability related issues.
