Colonialism is a defining process in global history. Colonial endeavors influenced the emergence of key historical developments such as globalization, industrialization, capitalism, and nationalism. Hence, this level one introductory course will survey the history of colonialism from the Americas to contemporary Palestine, a living example of this phenomenon and a window into such historical reality. Thematic foci will range from settlement, economy, law, slavery and military to environment, knowledge and technic, as well as culture, religion, race, gender, sexuality and ideology. The course will begin with a foundational question (what is colonialism?), delve into the ways colonial enterprises were created, expanded, and managed, assess the consequences of colonialism for Asia, Africa, and the Americas and end with a more in-depth analysis of its ongoing iteration in present-day Palestine.
