The vast expanse of the Indian Ocean is a locus of connection since time immemorial. Throughout this course, its rich past will expose a variety of historical inquiries away beyond nationalist epistemology (explored in ‘What’s Modernity?’) and towards a broadening of the horizon of investigations. Though its temporal scope privileges the Early Modern period, Ancient and Modern studies will be also covered, as they also encompass this vast area of research. The course approaches a variety of topics through the methodology of connected histories: trade, migration, pilgrimage, slavery, among others. Digital humanities tools are to be explored and applied to practical exercises in analysis of primary source materials. A visit to Sindh archives and a field trip to historical sites in Thatta are the two planned outside activities to achieve this course’s objective. By completing this program, the student should be able to conduct academic research in the field of Indian Ocean history.
