This course will introduce students to the subaltern perspective in South Asian history. It will look at 6-7 South Asian subaltern groups (such as peasants, factory workers, Hijras, prostitutes) and the ways in which they were impacted by colonial rule. It offers a radically different way of looking at history – from the sidelines – in a period that is generally well-studied but usually from the perspective of elites and policy-makers. There is a necessary fieldwork component to this course.
