This course focuses on the design and development of 2D and 3D interactive games. Drawing inspiration from iconic titles such as Super Mario Bros, Hollow Knight, The Legend of Zelda and Pokémon, students explore the ideas and mechanics that bring these games to life. Through a mix of lectures, prototyping sessions and hands-on projects, students will work through several stages of game development. Using the knowledge of math and physics, they learn to program game mechanics, systems and AI with an industry standard tool, Unity. The course also encourages students to craft their own stories and characters, create and manipulate art assets, work with music and SFX, add lighting and special effects to make their games more engaging. Students also explore the idea of “game feel” to make their games fun, fluid, and satisfying to play. By the end of the course, students will have built their own Indie-style games, setting them up for future projects in game development, whether as a hobby or a career.
