Bioscience Lab

The Bioscience laboratory enables students to understand the principles of biotechnology, microbiology and molecular biology and perform fundamental laboratory techniques. It allows the students to develop hands-on laboratory skills and get acquainted with core bioscience laboratory tools. Students enhance their physical skills learned in the theoretical part of the bioscience courses, “Introduction to Biotechnology (BIOT 101)” and “The Secret World of Microbes (BIO 102)” and conform to the standard practice of safe handling of biological reagents. Students get the opportunity to conduct biological science projects relevant to local society that require problem solving and creative thinking.

The Bioscience lab offers students to explore the unifying principles of life with emphasis placed on the following topics:

1 Safety guidelines, Media Preparation and Microscope Handling.
2 Aseptic techniques and bacterial culturing (Streak plate method and swabbing)
3 Microscopic morphology of organisms: Gram staining
4 Biochemical testing (Catalase, Oxidase, Urease, SIM, Citrate, TSI)
5 Microbial testing from different surfaces
6 Microbial testing from different food samples
