On May 22nd, Habib University hosted its highly anticipated annual President’s Dinner, gathering graduating students, faculty, and the university’s esteemed community of benefactors (Mohsineen). Held under the evocative theme “The Next Chapter Begins,” the evening served as both a celebration of academic triumph and a profound call to action for the graduating Class of 2026.
Guarding the Mind in a Distracted World
The highlight of the evening was a powerful keynote address delivered by Sammer Sultan, Co-Chairwoman of Shan Foods and the generous benefactor of the Endowed Chair in History, Heritage, and Archives at Habib University.
Addressing the graduates directly, Sultan offered a vital, grounding reminder about the psychological and intellectual challenges of the modern era. She urged the upcoming generation to actively resist the chaotic noise of contemporary society:
“Protect your ability to wonder, protect your ability to think deeply in a world that is designed to keep you confused, distracted, reactive, emotionally exhausted.”
Her words resonated deeply, framing intellectual independence and emotional resilience as the ultimate tools for navigating life beyond the university walls.
The Genie’s Lamp: A Metaphor for the Future
Taking the stage to address both the graduating scholars and the Mohsineen, President Wasif Rizvi utilized a compelling literary metaphor to describe the current state of global responsibility.
Turning to the story of the genie’s lamp, President Rizvi cautioned against the dangers of entrusting the world’s immense power and fate to the wrong hands. However, he noted that when that power is held by those with vision and empathy, much like Habib University’s dedicated benefactors, the future itself can be safeguarded.
President Rizvi emphasized that this symbolic torch of responsibility and guardianship is now officially being passed to the Class of 2026, challenging them to lead with the same ethical fortitude.
Realizing the ‘Miracle’ of Equal Opportunity
The real-world impact of the university’s mission came alive during a deeply moving segment titled “Miracle.”
Graduating scholars Janita Baloch and Muhammad Ibad took the stage to share their personal academic journeys. In an emotional tribute, they honored the Mohsineen whose generosity directly “widened the odds” for them. Their stories highlighted Habib University’s ongoing commitment to creating an equal playing field, ensuring that talented students from all walks of life have the resources and support needed to thrive.
As the night concluded, the sense of a new beginning was palpable. With the wisdom of their mentors and the backing of a dedicated community, the Class of 2026 steps into “The Next Chapter,” fully equipped to protect their capacity to think, wonder, and lead.
