Strengthening South-South Cooperation: Duke Kunshan University Visits Habib
September 1-4, 2026: A three-person high-level delegation from Duke Kunshan University (Jiangsu, China) visited Habib University for a series of leadership meetings and strategic exchanges. The visit, an academic benchmarking exercise requested by Duke Kunshan, included sessions on curriculum and academic governance, faculty support and advising, student and faculty exchange, and research support.
The visiting delegation included founding faculty Dr. Scott MacEachern, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs; Dr. Xin Li, Associate Vice Chancellor for Graduate Studies and Research; and Dr. Zach Fredman, Dean of Faculty Affairs and Chair of the Division of Arts and Humanities.
Day 1: Curriculum Philosophy and Core Alignment
The visit commenced with an executive welcome and campus tour. Discussions centered on the liberal arts core of both institutions, examining DKU’s mandatory, two-year interdisciplinary capstone thesis alongside Habib University’s Liberal Core and humanities majors. Both leadership teams noted significant structural parallels, particularly DKU’s 10:1 and Habib’s 12:1 student-to-faculty ratio and undergraduate mentorship.
Day 2: Mobility, Co-Curricular Strategy, and Governance
The second day prioritized institutional frameworks for student and faculty mobility. Joint sessions between academic leadership and student affairs explored DKU’s model for linking academic advising with career readiness and graduate school placement. The afternoon covered faculty governance and academic services, culminating in an executive session between DKU and the Office of Strategic Advancement and Institutional Development to establish partnership priorities.
A bespoke session for Habib’s graduating seniors was conducted, focused on finding the right academic fit, navigating scholarship and funding opportunities, evaluating academic pathways across China and the U.S., and determining readiness for graduate study.
Day 3: Research Enterprise and Operational Infrastructure
The final day focused on the operational foundations of academic quality. Participants examined research grant administration, institutional compliance, and faculty lifecycle management from recruitment to tenure support.
Across the three days, the engagement established concrete areas for joint teaching initiatives, research collaborations, and reciprocal exchange programs, reinforcing both institutions’ dedication to rigorous liberal arts education in the Global South.
The engagement reflects an increasingly witnessed shift in global higher education, where institutions look beyond legacy Western institutions to models like Habib for insight into liberal arts education in emerging contexts. It is the latest in Habib’s rich history of dialogical and mutually beneficial exchange with leading international universities, including Duke Kunshan, Texas A&M, Stanford, and others.
