Investigating the Role of Social Capital in the Settlement of Rural-to-Urban Migrants in Pakistan

Description

This research investigates how rural-to-urban migrants in Pakistan rely on kinship ties and community-based social capital to secure employment, housing, and social support in major urban cities, and how these practices remain relevant today. Reflecting on the concept of social capital, the study recognizes that relying on relatives, personal references, and favors to access jobs or housing has long been an informal yet deeply embedded social norm. Focusing on students, domestic workers, and laborers migrating from villages and small towns, the research examines how relatives, friends, and social networks act as intermediaries in securing employment, temporary residence, and a sense of emotional belonging.
