Ufaq Asad, a CND alumna from the Class of 2023, recently won the Best Debut Director award for her documentary, “Dou Kut Chai,” at the I Am Tomorrow International Film Festival 2023 held in Brussels, Belgium.
Her journey to success has been nothing short of inspiring for women in film. After completing her pre-medical studies, Ufaq followed her dream of being a filmmaker. As a woman navigating a male-dominated film industry, her perseverance is particularly noteworthy. Despite hurdles like equipment scarcity and the risk of harassment while filming in public spaces, Ufaq persisted, honing her craft and making a powerful documentary, “Dou Kut Chai.”
Ufaq’s documentary ‘Dou Kut Chai’, offers a glimpse into her life and the challenges faced by individuals living in the remote regions of Pakistan. The documentary covers a wide array of themes, spanning from migration, navigating the challenges of living alone in Karachi as a woman, and addressing issues of sexual harassment. It also explores lighter topics such as university crushes and fashion choices.
“Dou Kut Chai” has also been selected for various film festivals including Paigaam-e-Cinema in Lucknow and the Women International Film Festival in Islamabad. Ufaq’s commitment to storytelling and social impact shines through her work. She has also organized private screenings at the Center for Arts-Based Methodologies & Wellbeing (CFAW) and Mehr Ghar Lyari.
As she continues to pursue her passion for documentary filmmaking, Ufaq is currently working at the Citizens Archive of Pakistan (CAP) as an Assistant Manager of the Oral History Project.
