At a time when the world faces a growing crisis of leadership, Habib University continues to advance a bold, future-facing vision of learning that places ethical leadership, innovation, and real-world problem solving at the center of the university experience. Central to this vision is the Institute of Design Thinking, Entrepreneurship, and Leadership (IDEAL), a transformative academic space that bridges academia and industry, cultivates entrepreneurial and leadership mindsets, and equips students to navigate complexity with empathy, rigor, and purpose.
That vision was strengthened through a landmark philanthropic contribution from the Jaffer Family Foundation to Habib University. Through this partnership, IDEAL has been formally named the Jaffer Family Foundation Institute of Design Thinking, Entrepreneurship, and Leadership (IDEAL), and marks a significant step toward cultivating socially conscious leaders, innovators, and problem-solvers in Pakistan.
Marking a Defining Milestone
Habib University, on January 10, 2026, hosted the naming ceremony of the Jaffer Family Foundation Institute of Design Thinking, Entrepreneurship, and Leadership (IDEAL), marking a landmark endowment gift by the Jaffer Family Foundation in support of the University’s commitment to ethical and future ready leadership education.
Joined by his family, friends, industry leaders, and members of the academic community, Mr. Mohamedtaki cut the ribbon, symbolizing the beginning of a new chapter for the Institute.
The ceremony reflected IDEAL’s purpose: to bring together diverse voices around a shared commitment to leading with conscience. Throughout the program, a single theme resonated across remarks; that today’s leadership crisis cannot be addressed through technical skill alone, but requires ethically grounded, socially responsible decision-makers capable of navigating complexity.
Opening the ceremony, Ms. Manahil Huda, Assistant Director of IDEAL, highlighted the importance of the Institute and acknowledged the generosity of the Jaffer Family Foundation.
“IDEAL is Habib University’s response to the growing need for leadership that is thoughtful, ethical, and deeply engaged with the real world,” she said. “It brings together students, faculty, industry professionals, and global partners to work on real-world challenges that demand creativity, responsibility, and ethical judgment.”
‘IDEAL Is Essential’
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Mohamedtaki shared how critical thinking had changed the fortune of his business and why the mission behind IDEAL resonated so strongly with him.
According to Mr. Mohamedtaki, in this rapidly growing world, spaces like IDEAL are no longer optional, they are essential.
“The JFF Institute of Design Thinking, Entrepreneurship, and Leadership is the University’s most responsive global strategy. It is where theory meets practice, where students learn to navigate complexity and growth.
“Pakistan does not need more graduates who memorize answers. It needs thinkers who can raise better questions,” he stated.
He concluded by reflecting on the purpose of the Foundation’s support: “Even if a handful of students leave this space believing they can challenge assumptions, serve society, and build it even better, then this investment will have done what it was meant to do.”
A Global Perspective
A major highlight of the event was the keynote address delivered by Dr. Shannon Randolph, a Stanford-trained PhD and global design thinking expert, and Director of Community and Global Engagement at the Hive at the Claremont Colleges. Her remarks emphasized the necessity of human-centered designs and systems thinking for problems that resist simple solutions.
“Leadership is about bringing people together,” she said. “Innovators never stand alone. They always have communities behind them. Innovation takes a village, and students must learn to look beyond themselves to the people and communities who will become their greatest partners.”
Her reflections closely echoed IDEAL’s mission, reinforcing the need to move beyond siloed thinking toward approaches that understand people, context, and long-term impact as inseparable.
Reflecting on her experience at Habib University, she further described it as one of the most progressive and pioneering models of higher education she has encountered, noting that its emphasis on YOHSIN and community-centered learning sets it apart globally. She observed that IDEAL advances a bold vision that begins with responsibility to society rather than individual achievement and redefines how design, innovation, and entrepreneurship can serve the public good.
Leadership Crisis and the Role of IDEAL
Carrying the leadership theme forward, Sindh Education Minister Mr. Syed Sardar Ali Shah reiterated that universities carry responsibilities far beyond disseminating knowledge. He maintained that higher education institutions must cultivate ethical values, interdisciplinary thinking, and the capacity to address complex social challenges.
“The [Jaffer Family Foundation] Institute of Design Thinking, Entrepreneurship, and Leadership reflects a thoughtful response to a challenge we increasingly recognize — the need to develop leaders who are not only technically capable, but also socially conscious and ethically grounded,” he stated.
Habib University President Mr. Wasif Rizvi reflected on how the prerequisite for becoming a leader has shifted over time. In the past, the idea of ethical leadership was evident. Today, that understanding has been turned upside down.
He reaffirmed the University’s commitment to its undergraduate mission while extending its impact beyond campus.
“There are two fundamental things that we will not give up on, that we will continue to deepen the undergraduate experience and we are going to ensure that even people who have not come to the University, [from]various industry, at various level, from management training level, they approach their roles with the kind of thoughtfulness and ethics that are crucial,” he said.
Acknowledging a Transformative Partnership
Habib University Chancellor Mr. Muhammad Habib acknowledged the Jaffer Family Foundation and members of the Jaffer Family on their momentous partnership with IDEAL.
“The Jaffer Family Foundation has supported meaningful causes across the globe, touching lives and communities with a profound sense of purpose and responsibility. Their work has inspired many, and it is a great honor for Habib University to have their legacy woven into our journey,” he said.
For decades, the Jaffer Family Foundation has played an integral role in advancing education, health, social development, and women empowerment across continents, from Africa to Asia to North America.
Through its partnership with IDEAL, the Foundation extends this legacy into the future by supporting the development of ethical leaders and innovators who will shape society with responsibility, compassion, and vision.
The event concluded with Mr. Mohamedali Rafiq Habib, Member of Habib University’s Board of Governors and HUF, delivering the vote of thanks.
“We extend our deepest gratitude to the Jaffer Family Foundation for their extraordinary generosity, vision, and unwavering commitment to advancing education and nation-building,” he said.
A Living Commitment to Purpose-Driven Leadership
Through IDEAL, Habib University advances its mission to rethink higher education in Pakistan, equipping students with good judgment and a strong sense of responsibility alongside technical skills and ambition.
As the Institute continues to grow, it stands as a testament to what becomes possible when visionary philanthropy meets academic purpose, offering a model of leadership education rooted in empathy, innovation, and the conviction that the future can be shaped with intention.
