Project Title

Learning After Hours: A Case Study – Understanding Non-Formal Education in Urban Karachi

Description

This study qualitatively examines a non-formal school operating within a private school in urban Karachi. Using a qualitative case study approach, it explores a program that provides free after-school education to the children of household staff employed by the host institution. Non-formal education is associated with NGO-run or rural schools; however, this case challenges that definition by existing within an elite school. The study aims to understand how the program functions and how it complicates the distinction between formal and non-formal education. Findings show that the school benefits from access to the host school’s resources and teachers while emphasizing discipline and hygiene through a hidden curriculum. The program functions as both a supplementary and compensatory educational space for its students.
