Project Title

Social Media Shaping Perspectives: An Exploratory Research on the Influence of Social Media in Shaping Opinions of Pakistani Youth

Description

Social media is a tool that is widely popular amongst youth as a means of communication. It provides a platform to talk about any significant and interesting issue. However, while providing so, it influences the opinions and perceptions of the youth on socio-political matters. This influence can be both positive and negative. This research explores the influence of social media in shaping opinions of Pakistani youth aged 16- 24 in the light of Noor Mukadam murder case. The data is gathered by conducting in-depth semi-structured interviews of three participants recruited through convenience and snowball sampling. The interviews collected were then transcribed and coded to identify emerging themes to draw conclusion. The findings reveal that social media indeed influences opinion formation. The research demonstrated that social media can cause selective exposure and filter bubbles resulting in limited and restricted view on an issue but the it also highlighted the fact that social media promotes awareness, empowerment and activism.
