Project Title

Jugaadoo Shehri of Karachi: A Study of Karachiites' Experiences and Perceptions to Explore Jugaad and its Slippery Slope into Corruption, Illegality, and Moral Dilemmas

Description

Karachi, the gadh of jugaad (hub of jugaad), witnesses its pervasive application across various arenas of everyday life, from domestic settings to bustling streets, businesses to legal affairs, and academic pursuits to social interactions. By examining the rich experiences, perceptions, and awareness of Karachiites, this study delves into the nuanced meanings of jugaad within Karachi's cultural landscape, while also providing insightful commentary on the intricate interplay between jugaad and its ethical, legal, and moral dimensions against the backdrop of lax regulations. Utilizing a phenomenological framework, the research employs semi-structured interviews as a qualitative methodology to explore the practice and prevalence of jugaad in Karachi's North Nazimabad town. Through this exploration, the study reports the reasons behind Karachiites' embrace of jugaad, its evolution into a deeply ingrained habit, and the often-ambiguous boundaries between jugaad and instances of corruption, misuse of power, and moral and ethical dilemmas.
