Final Year Project

Project Title

Maila Qisasy Moment: Pecuniary Resistance by Working Class Youth in Karachi

Description

In times of calm, for societies that are going through social upheaval, there is a fracturing and revolution in their cultural identity. One can see this in post-war Britain and similarly in a post-MQM Karachi. The subcultures that have arisen to answer questions pertaining to their own class conditions in Karachi represent hidden and ignored problems in this city. Taking cues from the progenitor of youth subcultural studies, the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies, infusing frameworks of Pierre Bourdieu and Thorstein Veblen, this paper identifies the political gap that "Maila" culture fills in a comparatively apolitical Karachi.
