Masking: An Ineffective Emotional Regulation Strategy

Description

My thesis explores the challenges of masking, specifically within the context of cultural norms and display rules. I aim to use portraits to depict the toll that masking can have on individuals, including the emotional and psychological burdens it creates, as well as the potential ineffectiveness of masking as a coping mechanism. By employing portraits as a primary research method, I seek to capture the nuanced experiences of individuals who have had to conceal their emotions, thoughts, or identities to conform to cultural norms or display rules. Through the use of portraits to expose the impact of masking, I hope to foster vital discussions regarding the challenges of emotional regulation in the face of cultural pressures.
