Final Year Project

Project Title

AI-based Screener to Detect Signs of Dyslexia in Children's Handwriting

Description

Our Capstone project is an EdTech research project aimed at developing a computational screening system to detect signs of dyslexia in children's handwriting. Diagnosis and intervention are critical, as it hinders academic activity, self-esteem, and long-term quality of life. Due to the complex diagnosis processes, contextual gaps in methods, and a lack of availability of remedial therapists and clinical psychologists in Pakistan, our study explores the potential of computationally screening for dyslexia by analyzing children's handwriting to make screening more accessible. Our developed screener was tested with handwriting samples of 18 children between the ages of 5 and 15, using classification models to predict the risk of dyslexia. There was 70% accuracy using transfer learning, showing potential for increased accuracy when paired with larger data samples and better optimization techniques.
