Project Title

Pakistani Women in Engineering and Medicine: Occupational Decision Making and Parental Influence

Description

With the context of Pakistan, and specifically Karachi, my thesis aims to explore the dimension of choice-making by looking at parental influence on the career choices of young women working in the STEM fields, specifically Engineering and Medicine. In order to examine how parents, influence young women’s choice to work in engineering and medicine, a comparative analysis was carried out on the ways women had experienced this dimension of their occupational choice-making process. A comparative analysis helped uncover any differences or similarities in the lived experiences of these women. Thus, this pointed to the question of agency versus structural constraints as well as the compromises they have made, and the negotiations they had to engage in.
