About the Workshop

The workshop will introduce participants to the exciting field of Data Science and Machine learning with hands-on experience using popular tools and libraries. Some of the major topics include Data Exploration and Visualization, making Predictions and Recommendations, and handling Big Data. The workshop will also create awareness about ethics and responsibilities underlying a data-driven field.

Date: 10th – 14th July, 2017
Time: 9am – 5pm
Venue: Soorty Hall, Habib University

Speakers

Dr. Mobin Javed

Post-doctoral Research Scholar
International Computer Science Institute, Berkeley, USA

Dr. Mobin Javed is a Post-doctoral Research Scholar in the Networking and Security group at the International Computer Science Institute, Berkeley. She received her Ph.D. in CS from UC Berkeley in 2016, and her M.S. and B.S. from NUST, Pakistan.

Her research focuses on analyzing real-world data from large-scale networked systems to understand Internet adversaries and fight cyber threats. She also has a keen interest in problems that have a potential for direct social impact. She was recently selected as a fellow at the Data Science for Social Good (DSSG) program at the University of Chicago, where she worked to help fight poverty through data science.

Mobin is also the co-founder of GradApp Lab, Pakistan, a mentoring effort that connects aspiring grad school applicants with mentors abroad.

Dr. Humera Noor

Quality Program Management / Big Data Specialist at Cliqz – Munich, Germany

Dr. Humera Noor was born with a passion for teaching, which led her to join the Computer & Information Systems Engg. dept. at NED University right after graduation from the same. She developed interest in Artificial Intelligence during her undergraduate studies and decided to pursue her doctorate in Machine Learning and Computer Vision. Her stay at University of Central Florida during PhD and later at Technische Universität München for postdoc let her dig deeper into image processing, visual perception and assistive robots.

After spending over a decade at the academia, Dr. Humera joined Cliqz three years ago, which is a startup in Munich, Germany aiming to revolutionize the Internet by combining the power of data, browsers and search. Here she got to work first-hand with big data. Currently she is taking care of a team of analysts, engineers and students as a Quality Program Manager and pursuing her love of teaching by looking after "Cliqz University" - the technical on-boarding program at Cliqz.

When she is not teaching or messing with data, Dr. Humera can be found sky diving, hiking in the mountains, or reading a book. She can be reached at https://www.linkedin.com/in/humeranoor

Dr. Syeda Saleha Raza

Assistant Professor (Computer Science)
Habib University

Dr. Saleha is passionate about the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and is excited to use AI to solve real-world problems. She has completed her Ph.D. at the Artificial Intelligence Lab at IBA Karachi. During the Ph.D., she was awarded the Australian Endeavour Scholarship’ 2011 and visited Quantum Computation and Intelligent System (QCIS) lab, University of Technology, Sydney as a doctoral fellow. In 2012, she visited Microsoft Research Lab, Cambridge as a research intern and worked with Machine Learning and Perceptron Group. Dr. Saleha has been actively involved in the areas of Robotics, Machine Learning, Probabilistic Reasoning and Computational Intelligence.

She played a crucial role in developing a robot soccer team at IBA named KarachiKoalas that participated in World RoboCup Soccer Simulation 3D league in 2011 – 2013. She has also worked on an ICT R&D funded project on anti-money laundering where she worked with the live data of some Pakistani banks and applied novel techniques to identify suspicious financial transactions. Her probabilistic reasoning tool IBAyes is freely available to download. IBAyes allows its user to model uncertain situations and perform inference using Bayesian networks and its variants such as Influence Nets.

Ms. Hira Bashir

Analytics Manager
ETC Consulting Inc. Chicago, USA

Hira Bashir is the co-founder of a US based startup that leverages Data Science techniques to grow a corporation’s internal revenue and profits. The former Fulbright scholar completed her Masters in Computer Science from the University of Southern California and worked with several multinational companies in the past. Currently she leads a team of analysts who explore, visualize and model massive datasets in the health and retail vertical. Hira believes that by using quantitative strategy, predictive modelling and market place optimization techniques better frameworks can be devised for any vertical to optimize decision making. Data, she says, is changing both the questions and answers today.
