The Playground at Habib University hosted Invent for the Planet 2022 (IFTP 22) - a 48-hour intensive design experience (IDE) in collaboration with Texas A&M University (TAMU), from February 18 – 20. This event aimed to simultaneously engage students in all the universities around the world on a single weekend to solve high impact, global problems.
During the course of this event, the students engaged in a structured design process solving some of the most challenging problems in the world. They worked in teams with faculty and industry mentors and competed with teams all over the world. This 48-hour event provided students with the opportunity to acquire skills essential to becoming successful innovation leaders.

This year, as part of Designing Planetary Futures we will be exploring the themes of Designing For Circularity, Imagining Futures and Exploring Urban Ecologies.
Designing for Circularity | Sustainable systems and product design
Our production-consumption systems and throwaway culture have many consequences for the environment in terms of resource extraction, waste generation and emissions. An economic model built on circular supply chains and material use can substantially reduce the environmental burden. However, it requires fundamental shifts in our consumption behaviours and relationship with resources. ...

Imagining Futures | Speculating for our planet
Imagining is the first step towards making change happen. We have to look for hope to inspire us to act. We will be using the power of different mediums like illustration, storytelling, film and media to speculate futures, create new narratives and visualize the change we want to see. Through creative endeavours we can start conversations, provoke action and build movements. ...

Exploring Urban Ecologies | Socially and environmentally responsible design strategies
The interrelations between urban communities and their natural and built environments are complex. Our concrete landscapes need to support the needs of native ecosystems. We will be combining urbanism with ecology, and design with systems and policy, to explore how cities can sustain both people and nature. ...
The playground is bringing together a community of collaborators and experts across disciplines, to investigate how we should inhabit the world in the face of the climate crisis. It is through dreaming, mapping, making, experimenting and taking action, that we can start collectively Designing Planetary Futures

Design needs to be slower and more deliberate. We can no longer be exploitative, extractive and wasteful. We need to imagine new ways of living, consuming and distributing in order to build regenerative futures. Indigenous ecological knowledge, geoengineering and circular economies are some of the models and methods we need to explore and understand.

Human activities have changed the Earth System to the point where we are in a new geological epoch, the Anthropocene. Climate change, biodiversity loss, waste and pollution are among the biggest challenges we will face in our lifetime. This is estimated to cost Pakistan $3.8 billion yearly in economic loss.
