Project Title

GENDERED EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE: WOMEN'S PLIGHT AND THE FLOODS OF 2022

Description

This study examines the gendered effects of the climate crisis on women displaced to Karachi after the 2022 floods. It explores how displacement impacts their safety, livelihoods, and well-being, exacerbating existing gender inequalities in patriarchal societies. Using a qualitative approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with women from rural Pakistan now living in Karachi. The analysis identified key themes, revealing increased domestic violence, financial instability, and mental health challenges. Limited access to safe housing, employment, and support networks worsened their vulnerabilities. While aligning with global studies, the findings highlight unique challenges in Pakistan, such as cultural taboos around seeking institutional help. This research underscores the urgent need for gender-sensitive disaster response strategies, focusing on mental health support, safe migration pathways, and post-disaster rehabilitation for women in Pakistan.
