Project Title
Open Door or Closed Gates: Mapping Karachi's Support System for Survivors of Domestic Abuse
Description
My capstone research examines institutional support systems for survivors of domestic abuse in Karachi, focusing on how these systems operate, coordinate, and regulate access to services. Using a qualitative approach, I conducted semi-structured interviews with government officials and NGOs, alongside field observations and policy analysis. The study mapped how survivors access legal aid, shelter, psychosocial support, and referral services. Findings showed that despite the presence of multiple institutions, support systems are fragmented, with inconsistent accessibility, weak coordination, and a heavy burden on survivors to navigate services. It also highlighted the normalization of non-physical abuse and gaps in institutional inclusion, revealing a disconnect between policy frameworks and on-ground realities.
