Finding Habib: Where It All Began – Sarah Khalid
My sister first applied to Habib University around 2019. We initially heard about it through a newspaper article, but it was really her experience there that left a lasting impression on me. Watching her study at Habib and hearing how much she valued the environment inspired me to explore the university for myself. Over time, that curiosity turned into a clear decision to apply.
Choosing Access: The HU TOPS Scholarship
Receiving the HU TOPS Scholarship became one of the most important factors in choosing Habib for my undergraduate studies. Studying on a full scholarship is a tremendous honor, and it significantly eased the financial burden on my family. More than that, it made quality education accessible and allowed me to fully focus on my academic and personal growth. By the time I received the scholarship, I had already made up my mind about Habib, so it felt less like a turning point and more like a confirmation that I was on the right path.

A Year of Uncertainty, A Shift in Direction
That sense of direction, however, came after a period of uncertainty. Before coming to Habib, I spent a gap year trying to figure out what I truly wanted to pursue. Like many others, I initially considered the medical field, but deep down I knew it wasn’t the right fit for me. During that time, I often wished I could speak to someone who understood that uncertainty. Eventually, I discovered Habib University’s Social Development and Policy (SDP) program. Its interdisciplinary nature immediately resonated with me, offering a path that aligned with both my interests and my questions. Soon after, I applied to the HU TOPS Program and was accepted, which solidified my decision to join Habib.

A Community That Shapes You
At Habib, I found an environment that was not only academically stimulating but also deeply supportive. I still remember my freshman year and how welcoming everyone was. This sense of community became a defining part of my experience.
Taking the Leap: Applying to Learn Abroad
At the start of my sophomore year, I learned about Habib University’s Learn Abroad Program. Seeing many students apply encouraged me to take the opportunity seriously. I put a great deal of effort into my application and presentation, fully aware of how competitive it was, especially for a funded program. When I was selected, it felt both surreal and deeply rewarding.

Representation and Voice in Global Spaces
Through this program, I attended Stanford University’s International Honors Program in Summer 2025; an experience that proved to be one of the most transformative of my life. During my time there, I also served on the program’s Advisory Council. As one of the few students representing South Asia, I became acutely aware of the importance of representation. Being in spaces where voices like ours are often underrepresented made me reflect on how powerful it is to bring diverse perspectives into global conversations.
Learning at Stanford: Rigor, Technology, and Exploration
Academically, the experience at Stanford was both intense and enriching. The courses were fast-paced, likely due to the condensed summer format, but incredibly engaging. I explored technology and engineering through interdisciplinary courses such as CS148: Introduction to Computer Graphics and Imaging, CS193C: Client-Side Internet Technologies, and CEE111M: How We Will Build on Mars: Space-Ready Civil Engineering. These courses not only strengthened my technical skills but also deepened my interest in interdisciplinary problem-solving.

Bridging Disciplines at Habib
Back at Habib, I am pursuing a major in Social Development and Policy alongside a minor in Computer Science. This combination has allowed me to bridge two seemingly different worlds. Studying policy helps me understand structural and social challenges, while computer science equips me with the tools to think about innovative, technology-driven solutions.
Research as a Lens to Understand the World
My research projects during my undergraduate journey have further shaped this perspective. One of my studies examined whether CGPA is a reliable measure of intelligence across disciplines, questioning conventional methods of academic evaluation. Another project used social network analysis in R to analyze how international media outlets frame gender-based violence. I have also explored Pakistan’s housing industry to understand how large-scale urban developments influence communities and economic opportunities. Through these experiences, I have learned that meaningful research often lies at the intersection of data and social understanding.
Looking ahead, I hope to continue working at the intersection of technology and policy, particularly in using data-driven tools and digital systems to improve policymaking and create more inclusive structures.
Advice for Students: Embrace the Intersections
For students trying to navigate diverse interests, my advice is to embrace interdisciplinarity rather than fear it. In my experience, the most meaningful insights often emerge when different fields intersect.
On Rejection, Persistence, and Opportunity
To those aspiring to opportunities like the HU TOPS Scholarship or international programs such as Stanford’s, I would say: stay proactive and apply widely. Do not let the fear of rejection hold you back. I once came across a quote that stayed with me: “If I knew I was 100 rejections away from my dream, how happy each rejection would make me.” That perspective completely changed how I approach opportunities; each rejection simply brings you one step closer to where you are meant to be.
Building Your Own Path
Ultimately, my journey, from a gap year filled with uncertainty to studying Social Development and Policy, and eventually attending Stanford to pursue the Computer Science courses I once only dreamed of, has taught me one important lesson: never compare your journey to anyone else’s. Comparison is the thief of joy. Instead, focus on building your own path, because in the end, all you truly have is the journey you create for yourself.
