Project Title

Seductions of Excessive Consumerism, Materialism and its Implications on Young Adults in Pakistan

Description

Materialists propose that buying things will make people happier; however, the viability of this assumption has often been empirically rejected. Previous literature suggests a positive correlation between responsibly reduced consumption and consumer well-being. Results from several polls in various studies indicate that people are happier when they prioritize spending on life experiences rather than material possessions. Given the contradiction between materialism and anti-consumption, the latter is expected to favor consumer well-being, as excessive materialism has been considered detrimental. This paper reviews the literature on materialism and anti-consumption and evaluates their respective impacts on consumer well-being.
