The Development of Capitalism in India: Cash Crop Production and the Development of Capitalism

My thesis examines the changes in agricultural patterns from pre-colonial India to post-colonial India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. I examined how the patterns of agriculture moved from subsistence and food crop farming to cash crop farming. Subsequently, I analyzed the change in the mode of production from what was known as the Asiatic mode of production (different from European feudalism) to the imperial or the colonial mode of production. My thesis has larger implications as it analyzes how states that gained independence in the 20th century are positioned in the global power structure, where they often serve the dual purpose of providing cheap raw materials to European industries, and serving as markets for them to sell their manufactured product.
