The Unwritten Identity

Description

This project will highlight and explore the culturally embedded perception of the male gender identity and expression in Pakistan. While the deep-rooted identity of the male gender is historically imprinted on Pakistani culture, this project argues that the fixed portrayal of the male gender is not a “written or established identity, nor a codified norm”, rather it is a socially constructed and internalized norm. The paper focuses on the role of agents such as religion, culture, traditions, media and society in the conditioning of the male gender and the social ramifications attached to such conditioning. It will define and explore the roles and attributes allocated to males, created by Pakistani society, through the lens of dance as a form of expression and art. The final project evolved into a short film titled "Kaash".
