Final Year Project
Project Title
Passive Filter Design for Variable Frequency Drives
Description
We worked with Gatron Industries Ltd. to devise a methodology for designing a passive filter to suppress the undesirable harmonic content produced by VFDs. The journey began with a theoretical understanding of what are harmonics followed by a literature review of existing solutions. However, we were looking for an engineering solution. We studied various structures of filters and worked on the design methodology, and related formulas realized the implication of theorems like Middlebrook and come up with a simple and deterministic approach to finding values of passive components for filters. For the POC, we tested and simulated our proposed methodology for low-order voltages. Then we moved towards implementing the proposed methodology for the Industrial level working on the design specification of 3-phase line reactors and mathematical modelling of THD which was later compared with the actual data from Gatron. We are further working on a mobile application as an interface. (Group Project)
