Project Title

OBSERVING FOOD AS A MEDIUM: IMPACT ON CULTURE, AUTONOMY AND ECONOMIC STABILITY IN KARACHI'S INFORMAL FOOD INDUSTRY

Description

This paper examines the experiences of home chefs and street vendors in Karachi. It explores how food functions as a cultural medium, shaping both personal and collective identities within the informal food industry. The research finds that while food blurs cultural boundaries, it also establishes its own distinct culture. Autonomy is subjective but gains significance when linked with mobility. Economically, vendors and home chefs can achieve stability when measured against the minimum wage. Additionally, the study highlights the roles of religion and education in shaping industry dynamics. It also uncovers broader implications affecting participants and identifies emerging challenges within the sector. By analyzing these aspects, the paper provides insight into how Karachi's informal food entrepreneurs navigate culture, independence, and financial stability while facing various socio-economic constraints.
