Project Title

The Challenges of Pakistan's Spice Trade Seen Through the Lens of Spice Markets

Description

This paper uncovers the challenges faced by sellers in the spice market, specifically looking at the impact of the growing demand for packaged, branded spices, and the grave neglect given by the government toward the preservation of cultural heritage. Drawing on ethnographic research, we explore the lived experiences of traders from the spice market in Saddar, Karachi, whilst juxtaposing it to the spice trade in India. Furthermore, this paper will examine the themes of market concentration, cultural preservation, government intervention, and will conclude by posing recommendations for how to increase the growth and development of Pakistan's spice markets.
