Final Year Project

Project Title

Simulation of a Reinforcement Learning Based Traffic Signal Algorithm at Jauhar Chowrangi

Description

My thesis is based on design and research to reduce traffic congestion and improve its flow in Karachi. Congestion that we witness contributes to a large part in deteriorating traffic at various intersections. This is because an equal duration of Green Light is assigned for each signal. Thereby, making the waiting time for the least and the most congested lane equal too. My proposal is to replace pre-timed traffic signals with actuated traffic signals. An outcome of that will be a signal operating with respect to real-time traffic density of each lane around the intersection. Part of my research is a comparative analysis of traffic signal algorithm and marking out an algorithm fit or Karachi. Using simulations, we found that by deploying Reinforcement Learning Model, waiting time at an intersection can be reduced by 70% to 80%.
