Final Year Project

Project Title

Project Atmos - Urban Ambient Air Quality Monitoring: Providing Karachi with Cleaner Air

Description

According to a WHO 2016 report, Karachi ranked fifth in the cities with the worst air quality in the world, causing various chronic pulmonary and cardiac diseases. With a rising population and waste incineration, the future seems bleak. Tackling such a widespread issue will come from awareness based on accurate representation of the problem, which has, however, never been generated on a city-wide scale. Our work has been on the development of an urban sensor network for monitoring Karachi’s air quality in real-time that can also run safely for long periods of time with minimal maintenance. This capstone design project is being done in collaboration with a business conglomerate, which is helping in the implementation of a city-wide sensor network. Real-time data produced by the sensors will be available to the public. The next task in this project is to develop machine learning systems that will predict the potential rise in pollution and will inform the public of possible ameliorative measures. This work can be followed on: project-atmos.herokuapp.com and is a joint project with Muhammad Hammad Siddiqui and Syed Jahanzeb Ibrar.
