Final Year Project

Project Title

Lasbela’s Sacred Soundscape: Mapping Hindu and Muslim Musical Traditions

Description

My thesis is a study of the sacred music practices of the southernmost province, Baluchistan, specifically of Bela. The community inhabiting the area constitutes mainly Hindus and Muslims living together despite colonial rhetoric. Within these two vast religions, there is an inherent relationship in the nexus between folklore, poetry, and diverse traditions that speak to an audience of similar taste and music style. Thus, I hope to reveal to the reader how the Muslim and Hindu music traditions exist in the same space and are connected through nodes of lyrics, venues and the styles
