Project Title

The Giving City: Investigating Karachi's Philanthropic Culture Through the Lens of its Philanthropic Actors

Description

Statistics prove that Pakistan is an extremely charitable country, with Karachi being the prime hub for much of its philanthropic activity. my capstone research aimed to develop a qualitative understanding of Karachi's philanthropic culture through engaging with philanthropic actors like volunteers, founders and important stakeholders within NGOs. Through speaking to people like Dr. Bari (Indus Hospital founder) and Mr. Mushtaq Chapra (TCF founder) and more, I understood the reasons behind the thriving philanthropic culture of Karachi and its people. The research uncovered that an outstanding amount of empathy, excessive Islamically motivated donations such as zakat and sadaqah, an absence of governmental social support, and some historical reasons are responsible for Karachi's highly active philanthropic culture.
