Project Title
Contemporary South Asian Intersectional Theory - How gay and lesbian cultures are presented in South Asia, and how they can be understood distinctly from Western ideas
Description
South Asia is the central theme in exploring gay and lesbian cultures, be it in literature, music, film or dance. In my paper I carried out historical research that looks into how gay and lesbian cultures are presented in the media, and how they can be thought of distinctly from Western modes of understanding queer categories. I also explored how Western queer categories came into being. It is also important to understand how the colonial onslaught of the British in the sub-continent was instrumental in transforming India into a “sexually repressed” society and whether or not we have been able to move away from this repressed state several decades after partition.
