Project Title

Exploring the Effects of Natural Disasters on Gender Relations—An Instrumental Case Study of the 2010 Attabad Disaster in Gilgit-Baltistan

Description

Climate change is one of the major challenges of our times, which adds considerable stress to our societies and the environment. The number of disasters and causalities has increased over time. It has been observed that societies with socio-economic challenges are more adversely affected by natural disasters. The Attabad disaster of 2010 in the mountainous region of Gilgit Baltistan is one of the ten major disasters Pakistan has experienced. The research objectives are to bridge the gap in the literature about the gender dimensions of the Attabad disaster and reflect on the experiences of primary survivors for future preparedness and resilience. Using the Social Relations framework by Naila Kabeer, the thesis aims to understand how institutions affect gender relations in a society affected by a natural disaster.
