Description

This thesis studies the informal economic sector of waste recycling in Karachi, including a large sector of waste pickers and itinerant buyers. By drawing on literature regarding integrated approaches to waste management, studying government policies, interviewing subject experts and waste pickers, and using case studies from other countries that adopted an integrated approach, the study attempts to determine the feasibility of an integrated waste management system in Karachi. Designing a successful solid waste management system requires a shift in its design, to not only focus on technical improvement but to also accommodate the socioeconomic factors that affect the field of waste management locally.
