Final Year Project
Project Title
Understanding Desifuturism
Description
For my final year project, I chose to research ‘desifuturism’ which is a relatively new area of discussion in scholarly works. Desifuturism is a way to view and/or produce speculative media that offers alternative fictions from a particularly “desi” perspective. My intention with this secondary research project is not to make any definitive statements but to only explore the subject in hopes to help further a discussion on it. Following are three of my key arguments: That desifuturism offers ways of viewing and producing media that engages with colonial and capitalist structures of power in place. That a piece of media cannot be desifuturist simply by virtue of being produced by someone from the South Asian diaspora, it must also acknowledge the historical and contemporary context critically in its capacity. That it draws from the shifting traditions of the desi diaspora but also acknowledges a shared history within desi experiences.
