Project Title

IMPACT OF SEAWATER INTRUSION ON THE LIVELIHOOD OF RESIDENTS OF INDUS DELTA: HISTORY, POLITICS, AND PERSPECTIVES

Description

The Indus Delta, the world's fifth-largest delta and home to the seventh-largest mangrove system, has lost millions of acres to seawater intrusion (SWI). This study examines its ecological collapse through qualitative methods archival research, stakeholder interviews, and policy reviews revealing governance failures and poor water management. A quantitative analysis using OLS regression assesses SWI's impact on livelihoods, showing a 15% decline per unit increase in SWI. Using DHS 2018 and Mehran University salinity data, findings confirm severe salt intrusion. The study proposes a "Water for Environment" framework to integrate ecological concerns into water management, mitigating SWI and protecting livelihoods.
